Mixed Arm Wrestling

February 21st, 2010 by No comments »

Just what is mixed armwrestling? If you’re a fan of arm wrestling and have never heard of mixed arm wrestling before, then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Generally, arm wrestling takes place between two men or two women and they battle it out over a table to see who has the most strength. In mixed armwrestling, the two combatants share the same goal of proving who is strongest, but this time it is man against woman.

As is the case with standard arm wrestling, two opponents each take a seat opposite each other and then square off with only a table top between them. The same rules that apply to same-gender armwrestling also apply here, though depending on the situation, the rules can be adjusted accordingly. A common adjustment is to allow the female competitor to use both of her hands against the stronger male competitor in an attempt to keep things even.

Of course, there have been times when the reverse of this rule has been used where the woman holds an obvious strength advantage over the man. It is fun to watch matches like these take place, especially when the woman wins hands down, so to speak. Lots of men take in stride, but plenty of others lose face at the fact that they were beaten by a single-handed woman even while they were allowed the use of both hands.

What makes mixed arm wrestling matches so entertaining is that no matter who seems to hold the advantage at the onset, the outcome really can be anyone’s guess. Big, burly men can be taken down by women who are much stronger than they appear.

Something that a lot of people think is that when a woman wins over a man who is the favorite for the match, then the match must have been “rigged” in some way. As in many sports, while some matches (few and far between, mind you) may be set up for show, in most cases, this is just simply not true. Most competitors of both genders in mixed armwrestling matches are in it for the win. If you don’t believe that, then do yourself a favor and check out a match or two sometime — the determination and effort exuded by each competitor as they sweat it out, giving their all, will quickly change your mind.

In essence, if you enjoy arm wrestling matches then you should likewise enjoy mixed arm wrestling matches, too.

Mixed Arm Wrestling Rules

February 21st, 2010 by No comments »

If you are wondering about mixed armwrestling rules, then this article should get you up to speed.

Overall, the rules for both mixed arm wrestling and same gender arm wrestling are largely interchangeable.  If you are familiar with the standard, accepted rules of the game, then you’ll have no problem understanding and following these rules.

Mixed ArmWrestling Rules:

*The competitors’ shoulders should be squared off with the table and no less than the distance of a fist away from their hands.

*The match begins on the referee’s call of “Ready, Go!” or other similar starting phrase.

*To win a match, an opponent must pin the opposition’s hand, fingers, wrist, or forearm to the touch pad.

*If opponents have a problem with their grips slipping, then the referee can order that their hands be strapped together.

*Getting three fouls constitutes a disqualification.  Fouls can be counted for many things, including:

–Crossing the table’s center line.

–Touching your body to your hand.

–Intentionally opening your hand to force your opponent to slip.

–Starting before the referee says to “Go.”

–Pinning the opponent while your elbow is “out of the pocket.”

With most sports, arm wrestling takes its fouls seriously and so most rules are built around keeping the competitors evenly matched and disallowing foul tactics and “dirty tricks.”

If ever a dispute arises over whether a pin was made or a foul has occurred, the referee always has the last and final word in their ruling.

Sometimes, especially in mixed arm wrestling competitions, players can get to acting less than “sportsman like.”  If the referee deems their behavior bad enough, he or she may give an immediate foul to the offender and possibly eliminate them from the competition altogether.

As you can see, the mixed armwrestling rules are pretty much universal with standard arm wrestling.  Of course, just because these are the basic rules, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be changes made to them.  Usually, these changes are like “house rules” and are essentially just small variations on the standard set.

Exhibition matches are different and don’t have to follow the standard rules.  A common exhibition in mixed armwrestling is where a woman takes on a man and allows him to use both hands during the match.  The man, often overcome with pride, will only elect to use one hand, believing he has an easy win. Before the match is over, he will likely use both hands as she proves a difficult opponent.  The outcome is never certain, but is always entertaining, especially when the woman comes out the winner.

Mixed Arm Wrestling Videos

February 21st, 2010 by No comments »

For those who like to be entertained by tests of strength, watching mixed arm wrestling videos is a good way to get your fix.  If you are not already familiar with them, mixed armwrestling videos feature “pulling” matches where women and men compete against each to see who is strongest.  They range from those made by professionals to that are no more than amateur cell phone shots taken from the hip of impromptu matches between friends.  These videos also run the gamut of honest matches to rigged affairs to those made for instructional purposes.  Indeed, there really is something for everyone.

Professionally produced mixed armwrestling videos are well put together and have a lot of polish.  The camera work is done well with steady shots and good angles of all the action.  Images are neither overblown nor too dark to see anything.  The soundtrack — whether it is music, narration, interviews, or sounds from the event — is clear and understandable.  Clips that are edited together are done so in such a way that the editing itself is usually not even noticeable.

These are high quality videos and are great for fans and casual sports watchers alike.

Amateur mixed arm wrestling videos, on the other hand, are usually characterized by their lack of polish, and in some cases, are devoid of it all together.  The image may be shaky.  The camera operator may excessively zoom in and out for no other reason than that they can.  Sound is often muffled or garbled.  These types of videos are often unedited and contain a lot of extra content that really doesn’t need to be there.

However, it is in these vids that you will find a lot of great stuff that just happened to be captured by someone who was in the right place at the right time.  Granted, you may need to wade through lots of lame footage to find the gems, but it is worth it.  These videos are more for the serious to hard core mixed armwrestling fans.

Besides variations in quality, mixed arm wrestling videos vary greatly in content as well.  You can get videos of whole events replete with interviews and other extras.  Other videos may be a collection of clips highlighting exceptional matches across many different events.  The video may be short, with only one quick match.  Maybe it’ll be of something really funny, like a blooper.  Of course, some videos are going to be fake and staged, thought generally these can be easy to spot.

Also, if you’re looking to compete or if you already are a competitor, then there are videos that will help you to learn and improve your game.  These would be well worth checking for any woman who wants to really put a man in his place!

All in all, no matter what your taste or what you’re after, you are sure to find a mixed armwrestling video or three to add to your list of favorites.

Women Arm Wrestling

February 21st, 2010 by No comments »

Arm wrestling as a sport has been popular among men for many centuries. It is still a common site to see men of all ages settle their disputes over the table. Women arm wrestling, however, is a whole other story.

A quick search online for women arm wrestling will pull up a lot of sites. Unfortunately, most of the sites are lacking in information on the sport. It can be determined that the reason for this is because armwrestling for women as a sport is a fairly new thing in the professional world.

In the United States alone, there are more than 10,000 professional armwrestling competitors and it would be a safe bet to say that less than 10% (or fewer than 1000) of these are of the female persuasion. Perhaps it is because arm wrestling has traditionally been a male dominated sport. Whatever the reason for the small percentage of women arm wrestlers, it is definitely not due to lack of interest from the fans.

While there are some fans that go to these events just to watch the women perform, the majority go for the men’s competition. Most people in the crowd are going to be male and as it is a “prove your strength” sport, they expect to see big men battling it out in the ultimate test of brute force. Many of these fans may be taken aback when it is time for the women’s bracket and they see two female athletes step up to the table. A few may even scoff at them, thinking they are nothing but a sideshow attraction to the main event.

It doesn’t take long for many of these naysayers to turn their opinion around once they see a match go down. As with any athlete in a competition, women arm wrestling combatants are there to prove they have what it takes to win. This is most evident when they step up to the table and square off. The focus and determination in both of the women’s faces and bodies is as serious — if not more so — as any athlete who competed at the table before them.

When the referee says, “Go!” all bets are off. The women arm wrestling at the table give it their all, angling for leverage, powering through for press downs, doing all they can within the rules of the game to pin the opponent to the table and show the crowd who’s boss.

Female Arm Wrestling

February 21st, 2010 by No comments »

All in all, female arm wrestling is quite similar to male arm wrestling. They follow the same rules, are divided into classes by weight, and each competitor is out to prove that she has what it takes to be the best of the best no matter what the prize on the line is. Therefore, if you enjoy the sport at all, then you will find that female armwrestling is a great way to add another dimension to that enjoyment.

As mentioned, the rules that are used for the women’s division are by and large the same rules that apply to the men. This makes it easy to get into the game without having to relearn how things work. You’ll recognize the starting postures straight away and you won’t be questioning why the referee called a foul for whatever reason. Of course, since the referee’s say is final, questioning his reasoning for things would likely be of no use anyway…

For each tournament, the women who compete in female arm wrestling are divided into different classes according to their weight. As the numbers of male competitors in this sport far outweigh the number of female competitors, the weight classes for the women will vary from time to time, depending on the situation. This is all done in an effort to keep the competition as equally balanced as possible. While this is fair, it does leave many women playing yo-yo with their weight in order to stay within their chosen weight class.

The rules, however, are not why people watch female armwrestling. They watch it because they want to see fierce, adrenaline fueled shows of strength and power between two determined women.

A female arm wrestling match is great fun to watch because it is never certain who will win until one woman’s hand is either pinned or she is disqualified. Whereas traditional strength and leverage tactics apply in these matches, other factors come into play as well. One winning factor is the determination and focus of each combatant. The mind is a very powerful tool and the woman who doesn’t use it to her fullest potential is at a definite disadvantage. In fact, it can be said that many matches are already decided before they begin based solely on the attitude and focus of each player.

Another factor is that some women also compete in mixed armwrestling matches where they may be pitted against men who are stronger than they are. Those women who compete against a variety of players, both male and female, often hold an edge over those with less experience. This is because they have developed more tactics to deal with the different adversaries and are better prepared to handle the intricacies of the game.

That is what female armwrestling is all about: women testing their strength in a controlled and highly competitive environment. And it’s all done the old fashioned way.

Mixed ArmWrestling

January 10th, 2010 by No comments »

The first thing that comes to mind when we speak of arm wrestling is strength. We also think of arm wrestling as all about raw power and vigor but I think, mental strength is also as important as physical strength. This sport is quite popular worldwide; especially among young men. But today, we also find women arm wrestling contests where young women demonstrate their power by wrestling with their arm in public. This type of wrestling is more commonly known as mixed armwrestling. Some people think that they can beat female competitors easily, but I would say think twice, I have seen many girls beat physically strong guys because of their mental strength. That’s why mixed arm wrestling has also emerged as a professional support, not just a fun game which was played at the bars.

Arm wrestling was played as a game of strength for centuries. Men would gather at one spot and choose two players to arm wrestle. The players would take their position by holding their right or left hand on top if a table and try their best to pin the other player’s hand on the surface of the table. Whichever player is successful in doing so is declared the winner.

Arm wrestling might just seem a fun-game, but it really takes a lot of mental and physical strength to compete in this sport; especially if the opponent is strong and sturdy. But for a while it was mainly played as a bar game, but now it has caught up again as an actual sport with official competitions. General and mixed armwrestling has certain rules such as

  • The players can use only one hand
  • The players cannot keep the other hand on the table
  • The players cannot get up from his seat
  • The players cannot raise their elbow from the surface of the table
  • The players cannot use any tricks such as distracting the other player, tickling, etc.

These rules are strongly adhered to when it comes to arm wrestling competitions. But some rules do tend to vary when it comes to different professional bodies and also in mixed arm wrestling. Mixed armwrestling is also similar, the only difference is that it’s played between a male and female. Mixed armwrestling has also caught a lot of buzz in the recent years. This game is very exciting as there are many supporters standing around the players and cheering them. This usually happens in all competitions; however the spectators need to keep some distance from the players.

The game is declared over only if one player pins the other’s arm one the surface of the table with the winners arm over the loser’s arm. Many competitions have a time limit for each game. But non-competitive games can go on as long as they want; depending on the players.

There are various techniques in arm wrestling that can help one win the game. Moreover the player participating in arm wrestling needs to have good arm strength. This can be attained by regular workout and exercise of the arm. Pull ups help in strengthening the arms.

An arm wrestler needs to have great overall arm strength, flexibility of the wrist, good hand grip size, muscle/mass/density of the arm and wrist endurance. Apart from these physical traits, reaction time and concentration also play important roles in winning an arm wrestling match.

In some countries; for example the United States, arm wrestling can also be performed with both the players standing up with both of them having their elbows rested on the surface of the tournament arm wrestling table. These tournaments are divided according to weight classes, as well as left-right hand division.

Mixed Armwrestling – The Secret Skills

November 24th, 2009 by No comments »

You may think that strength is the only thing that separates the winners from the losers in arm wrestling tournaments. Some might think that this is the case when it comes to mixed armwrestling.

But I have to say think again.

Mixed Arm wrestling champions will tell you: Intimidation and mental toughness are just as important when it comes to earning a championship in this very competitive sport. And yes, you heard it right, this type of arm wrestling is not just limited to bars and parties, but there are actually people that compete professionally.

Next time you watch an arm wrestling tournament, look for the unlikely champion. There are always a few at every tournament. It’s usually a little person, someone who doesn’t look particularly intimidating. The person’s arm may not be overly long. It may not be overly muscled. The same thing is true in a mixed arm wrestling match.

But somehow, this unlikely champ keeps wining and winning.

What’s the secret? Two things: The unlikely champions believe in themselves completely. They don’t think there’s even a possibility that they can lose. Secondly, they’re not afraid to do everything they can to intimidate their opponents.

This second part is important. More than in most sports, intimidation is the key in arm wrestling. The best wrestlers specialize in intimidating their opponents before a match even begins. And they use all the resources at their disposal to do this. The reason is simple: In arm wrestling, confidence is king. And it’s hard for an arm wrestler to be overly confident if he or she is intimidated.

How do you intimidate? Start by how you walk around the tournament floor. Walk with a swagger. Stand tall and straight. Sneer a bit. Look as cocky as humanly possible.

When you approach the table, and your opponent, give a cocky grin. Sit down at the table with a flourish, and make sure that you put your arm on the table first. You want your opponent to know that you’re ready to go, and that you’re not the least bit afraid regardless of your gender or the advantage that male opponents might think they have in a arm wrestle.

Then, when it’s time for the match to start, make a few off-hand comments about how nervous your opponent looks. Maybe you can mention that your opponent should just surrender and spare the embarrassment of a humiliating defeat.

Of course, you do have to have some skill to win your mixed armwrestling matches. Even the most intimidating stare or glib putdown won’t lead you to victory against more experienced, less easily cowed opponents. But swagger and confidence can only provide a boost to your arm wrestling skills.

You’ll need inner confidence to pull this off. You can’t swagger, sneer or preen if you don’t truly believe that you can win. So before you hit the tournament scene, work those arm muscles and schedule as many impromptu arm wrestling matches as you can. Practice and skill are what build true confidence.

And once you have that inner confidence, you can work on your intimidation skills. This combination – skill, confidence and the ability to project that confidence – will lead to a victory in a mixed armwrestling.
